If you have a clogged filter then it can affect your fuel efficiency because your engine has to expend more energy than it should. Ideally, you should replace your cabin air filter once or twice, depending on usage throughout the year.

There are many components in automobiles that are small but have great importance in terms of their task. Cabin filters, also called pollen filters, which directly affect fuel consumption, travel comfort, and human health, are one of these components.

The cabin air filter is the part that removes harmful pollutants such as pollen and dust from the air inside the vehicle. This filter, which cleans the air from the air conditioning system, is usually located behind the glove box.

Cabin filters which consist of small and curved structures are produced from paper-based or fibrous cotton materials. One of the most preferred filter types is the carbon pollen filter. Since the active structure of carbon interacts chemically with many substances in nature, it plays an important role in preventing bad odors.

The cabin filter is usually located in the glove box, near the vehicle's interior air intake. In addition, you should check and replace your cabin filter regularly because it's a vital health and safety component. It is also useful to consider the following symptoms for pollen filter replacement:

  • Whistling sound coming from cabin air intake ducts,
  • Moldy and unpleasant odors in the cabin atmosphere,
  • Excessive noise when the heating or cooling system is operating.

What Happens If The Pollen Filter Is Not Replaced?

Cabin air filters that have been used for many years can cause disturbing results when they are not changed. The main risks posed by a dirty pollen filter are:

  • Poorly functioning air conditioning system: A filter that has completed its service life can force the air conditioning system of the vehicle, causing a decrease in efficiency, an increase in fuel consumption, and a greater load on the engine by forcing the system.
  • Fogged windows: One of the problems that arise when airflow is compromised is fogged windows. Especially in winter, poor-quality air from dirty filters causes condensation on the windshield.
  • Bad odors: If you think that the irritating odors originate from the areas you pass through, you are wrong. Unreplaced cabin air filters cause a musty smell to be blown into the vehicle while the air conditioner is operating.
  • Health issues: A functional pollen filter is of great importance to keep the vehicle interior free of pollutants. Because a dirty or clogged filter can cause various health problems for people with allergies or breathing difficulties. Especially those living in wooded areas need to change their pollen filter every February before the spring allergy season arrives.
