Oil filter is one of the most important components of any vehicles. The main working principle of this component is to filter the engine oil to ensure a healthier and higher engine performance. The engine oil supplied to the engine can be cleared off from the residues such as small rocks, dirt and dust. Thus, the engine of a vehicle can have a longer lifecycle thereby increasing the lifecycle of the vehicle itself.

Oil Filter Working Principle

In most vehicles, the oil filter is mounted in front of the engine. The filter is positioned between the engine oil tank and the engine to regulate the oil flow from the oil tank to the engine. The working principle for this component is the same for petroleum and diesel vehicles. However, the position and size of the oil filter may vary depending on the brand and model of the vehicle.

In the simplest sense, the oil filter will filter out the residues and undesired materials in the engine oil. Over time, the engine oil can contain some small particles such as small rocks, dirt, dust and pollen. Generally, it is not possible to prevent such accumulation since it is due to usage of the vehicle. However, it is important to keep these particles away from the engine.

The oil filter will stop both big and small particles in the engine oil to be delivered to the engine. The particles will stick to the surface of the filter and do not go inside the engine or its components. This is important to minimize the mechanical damage due to friction between these particles and the engine parts.

When Should You Change Your Oil Filter?

Since the oil filter is responsible from keeping out the particles from the engine, the filter can get blocked over time. It is important to check the oil filter regularly and change the filter when necessary. The exact time to change the oil filter is unknown since this time can change based on the usage conditions. For example, if you use the vehicle is a dirty and dusty road all the time, you might need to replace the oil filter more frequently.

In general, it is best to replace the oil filter in annual vehicle maintenance. However, if there is any oil filter failure or if you experience any performance decrease in your engine, you might need to consider replacing the filter sooner. At this point, you need to use high quality spare parts that match your vehicle brand and model for the highest performance.
